What you will take away
- 01 Use 에 for a destination
- 02 Use 에서 for the place where an action happens
- 03 Choose the particle from the role of the place
Key phrase
카페에 가요. 카페에서 공부해요.
In 카페에 가요, the café is the destination, so 에 is used. In 카페에서 공부해요, the café is where studying happens, so 에서 is used. This article focuses specifically on these two location uses.
Start with one simple distinction
에 and 에서 both appear after places, so they can feel similar at first. A useful way to separate them is to ask whether the place is where you are going or where you are doing something.
The basic distinction is simple: use 에 when you are talking about where you are going, and use 에서 when you are talking about where you do an action.
The same place can take a different particle depending on its role in the sentence.
카페에 가요.
The café is the destination.
카페에서 공부해요.
The café is where studying happens.
어디에 가요? Use 에 for a destination
When a place is the destination of movement with verbs such as 가다, 오다, or 도착하다, attach 에 to the place.
It can help to think of this as answering the question 어디에 가요?
Pattern
place + 에 + 가요 / 와요 / 도착해요
학교에 가요.
I go to school.
집에 와요.
I come home.
서울에 도착해요.
I arrive in Seoul.
카페에 가요.
I go to a café.
어디에서 해요? Use 에서 for an action
Use 에서 when the place is where an action such as studying, eating, working, or meeting someone happens.
Think of it as the place that answers 어디에서 해요?
Pattern
place + 에서 + action
학교에서 공부해요.
I study at school.
카페에서 커피를 마셔요.
I drink coffee at a café.
공원에서 친구를 만나요.
I meet a friend at the park.
회사에서 일해요.
I work at the office.
One place can have two different roles
Looking only at the place itself is not enough. Look at what role that place has in the sentence.
A place can be a destination in one sentence and the location of an action in another.
도서관에 가요.
Use 에 because the library is the destination.
도서관에서 책을 읽어요.
Use 에서 because reading happens at the library.
식당에 가요.
Use 에 because you are going to the restaurant.
식당에서 밥을 먹어요.
Use 에서 because eating happens at the restaurant.
The verb can help you decide
If the role of the place is not obvious, look at the verb first.
For the location meanings covered here, movement toward a destination with 가다, 오다, and 도착하다 commonly uses 에. Actions carried out at a place, such as 공부하다, 먹다, 만나다, and 일하다, use 에서.
Both particles have other uses, so use this shortcut specifically for distinguishing destinations from places of action.
가다 → 학교에 가요.
Destination
오다 → 집에 와요.
Destination
공부하다 → 학교에서 공부해요.
Place of action
만나다 → 카페에서 친구를 만나요.
Place of action
Read a short conversation
In a real conversation, 에 and 에서 often appear close together. Say the destination first, then explain what happens there.
오늘 어디에 가요?
도서관에 가요.
도서관에서 뭐 해요?
한국어를 공부해요.
그다음에는 어디에 가요?
카페에 가요. 카페에서 친구를 만나요.
A common mistake and an easy memory cue
A common beginner mistake is using 에 for the place where an action happens.
A useful first memory cue is: 에 for where you go, 에서 for where you do something. Then check the role of the place in the sentence.
카페에 공부해요. → 카페에서 공부해요.
Studying happens at the café.
도서관에 책을 읽어요. → 도서관에서 책을 읽어요.
Reading happens at the library.
